Starting sometime in the late 20s or early 30s boys and girls in 4-H had the opportunity to attend what was called the State Fair Educational Encampment where they were selected by their agent to attend and were required to exhibit at least one agricultural entry. They arrived by train for their three-day stay and were provided bunks for housing and good wholesome meals. During their stay, a supervisor guided them on detailed routines with special hours devoted to recreation and Fair entertainment.
The Fair was a central location for a large offering of purebred genetics so many gilts and boars came to Dallas to change. By the 70s the State Fair was also encouraging an agriculture education component for producers. Real recalls the fair of vividly as he had the opportunity to meet then President Gerald R.
The two took in some of the Hampshire Gilt Show happening that day, with secret service detail stationed at every entrance to the swine barn and strict protocols in place. Real was impressed that President Ford showed great interest in how judge Larry Tackett went about giving his placing and reasons and asked very intelligent questions. This decline however, allowed purebred producers to rethink their marketing strategies and led to the mindset of the main customer base switch, and to appeal to the new customer base of 4-H and FFA youth looking to raise show pigs.
Over the years, breed popularities in industry and at State Fair have fluctuated. The early s saw a heightened preference for maternal breeds, while the s have brought great demand for Durocs and much growth in the Berkshire breed. State Fair of Texas elected to discontinue its open boar and gilt show in due to lack of entry numbers. Instead, a partnership with Team Purebred was formed to increase youth involvement.
This helped build the show to its success today. However, in the best interest of both parties, State Fair decided to part ways with Team Purebred and debuted their own youth purebred gilt show the following year. This also paved the way for the return of the Pan-American Breeding Gilt show, allowing exhibitors to double enter their gilts. The transition was well received, and the show has continued to increasingly grow with nearly head entered and an eighty percent arrival rate this past year.
Undoubtedly change, growth and innovation in both the swine industry and the State Fair of Texas swine divisions will continue for decades to come. Some of the learnings from the event are directly influencing our current strategy. It truly is the absolute best content driven and best attended event in the space globally. I have to say that I have never been so busy meeting people in such a concentrated period of time…the stack of business cards I came home with is over 2 inches high!
As an attendee of many agribusiness conferences, I found Global AgInvesting to be the best. The content was rich in information and the conference drew a terrific group of seasoned agribusiness investors and those considering the same. This proved to be just the right chemistry to accomplish our mutual goals.
My congratulations to you on a well-run, clearly successful conference. The conference addresses a market in need and in a strong, professional manner.
